Accenture wins $33M deal with Air Force - NCR, Peerless Technologies to share in work

Accenture won a six-year, $33 million contract to develop and install the U.S. Air Force's first real-time financial management system that will be used at 75 bases and commands worldwide, company officials announced.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will manage the contract, said Accenture partner Jim Trowhill. "We're doing the vast majority of the development work in Dayton," he said.
Accenture will use NCR Corp.'s Teradata data warehousing equipment and software as well as Miami Valley-based subcontractors, including Peerless Technologies Corp., LOGTEC and AF Kelley.
"Obviously, this is a great win for NCR, Teradata and Accenture," said Steve Millard, vice president for strategic partnerships for NCR's Teradata division. The Air Force is expected within three years to be using a 10 to 20 terabyte system, Millard said. One terabyte equals one trillion bytes. If one byte were one inch, a terabyte would equal 15.7 million miles, or 30 round trips between earth and the moon, NCR officials said.
It is unclear how much of the $33 million will go to Accenture and how much to NCR and other subcontractors at this point, Millard said.
Trowhill said the new system will be released to the Air Force in functional pieces, every nine to 12 months. The system, which will replace multiple legacy computer systems, will give the Air Force better cost modeling capabilities, shared information, better manpower estimates and a single standard for budgeting and funds management.
Work on the contract begins immediately, Millard said.
Officials at Wright-Pat could not be reached for comment Monday.
Accenture and NCR signed a strategic alliance deal two weeks ago that will help NCR extend its reach into more industries and markets, Millard said. NCR has been selling and installing Teradata systems in the retail, finance and insurance, government, travel and telecommunications industries. SBC Communications has the largest commercial data warehouse with 125 terabytes, an NCR spokeswoman said.
